Hello!
So i was thinking about a nice and not-rushed suggestion.
So i cam with a sort of damage model
For example:
When you get attacked by a enemy player, and the your right side is getting a heavy beat (lots of damage) then the AFTER effect is that your right engine will fail sometimes, leaving you spinning a bit, until you manage to repair it.
Same with weapons, when you shoot in a cave for a long time (cave = Dust/stone in the air) results that the gun can be jammed for a few seconds
And if a enemy shoots on a certain point your energy can be switched off what will result in a short stun.
Could be a little hard to script though.

But thats something we have thought about, including overheating and damaged controls due to electrical problems. We'll see how this has an effect on gameplay.

Well, it has to be a rare case, a failure with your ship will have a 50-50% chance that it would happen.
Otherwise people could get angry that there ship is acting weird all the time

I surport this idea somke what, but make it only a low health, so when they manage to kill you after getting to low health, you can kill the disabled mothafu... eh, im taking it to far, but you get my point. easy revenge.

I really like this idea. For me the big appeal of this game is the atmosphere. I can imagine being outnumbered and out gunned, making your way into an abandoned space station on just inside an asteroid, switching your engines off and praying they don't find you as you watch their flash lights tracking for you.

Wouldn't some people Follow you everywhere shooting your engine just to make you angry? It would be a comical idea though.

For hit boxes, they don't need to be as small as the weapon itself. No one could hit that on purpose. I think that just shooting in the general area would be sufficient for the game-play.
Here's my ideas for the ship's systems and hit boxes:
Oxygen: Front of ship, causes gradual oxygen leak and fractured cockpit window. Causes instant death upon missile hit or further gun fire.
Fuel: Bottom of ship, gunfire causes fuel leak. Missile hit causes spontaneous explosion. Tracer rounds have a small chance.
Navigation: Back of ship, causes Inertia mode until fixed.
Communication: Top of ship, causes radar malfunction and does not allow you to chat.
Weapons (Right): Right of ship, causes right weapon malfunction.
Weapons (Left): Left of ship, causes left weapon malfunction.
Each of the hit boxes could cause engine malfunctions in their respective areas also.
