It can be very hard to track a moving target with guns across a distance, especially in a 6dof game. I remember another space sim putting a little triangle that lead the enemy ships. That was about where you should be shooting to hit them. Something like this would be very nice :)

same here just about every space game i played had something like this.
i gotten use to how that stuff works that i was able to aim where the npc was heading even though i missed half the time :P
anyway having this feature would help improve game play ALOT thats my opinion.

Yes, I want this too and some devices that interfere with the targeting system.

I believe target leading would be quite useful. A fun way to impliment this could be 3 levels of it based off of off at least 2 devices.

The first level could be with no device on ship you see a larger hexagon in which to aim into. The second level could be with a low to mid cost device, narrowing the shape down in size to maybe 2/3 the size. The last level could be a high cost item narrowing it down to 1/6th the original size.

This could give the user options as to which they like best as well as gives us something to save for.

Leading is good - pretty much required in many cases.

Problem is, how do you do leading when there are multiple weapon types (each with different projectile speeds)?

Well it could adjust to always lead properly for the primary weapon. Then your lasers target point will be much closer then the cannons.

Modern fighters have target leading systems, I think they'd keep that for space combat. ;)
Some electronic warfare might be cool too.

Personally I'd be against the idea it would take less thought to aim and would take part of the human side out of the experience.

Personally, I have a bit of a time with firefights. The technical demo scenes don't quite do justice to the computational intensity of the fight scenes, and I need a new computer. I need all the help I can get at 3 fps.
Therefore, I'd like to see this.

P.S.: Lasers are more or less instantaneous over the kilometer or two distances we're talking about, so we wouldn't need targeting for them. This ain't Starwars...

probably.

Most probably wont remember Wing Commander Privateer but it had a very nice ITTS (Inertial Targeting and Tracking System ).
Each gun type had it's own cross hair and color.

Without some sort of targeting system it will be pointless to play this game.

Along the same lines, the current gun system needs help. The "turn your ship to aim" paradigm is awkward and makes it very difficult to shoot accurately. I would like to see pivoting guns and a moving cursor similar to Freelancer.

I support this as well.

Freelancer and X3:TC, the two other main spaceflight games I've played, both offered a leading point-of-aim on the HUD. It made things easier, certainly, but at no point did it guarantee a hit as the provided POA was estimated based upon the enemy ship's current vector of travel. If the ship turned, the lead point you just shot at was wrong and caused you to miss. It's a far cry from the making-the-game-too-easy sentiment from some in this thread.

I'm voting for this as well. Would make combat very intuitive. Maybe add some slower guided missiles with a limited range as well. It'd make dogfighting fun, that's for sure. :D

in the Freespace games, it has two separate LAI pips, which is noticed when you have two different forward weapons on board, because they will diverge, indicating the appropriate LA for the relevant weapon.

Target leading seems to take a little bit of the skill out of multiplayer and singleplayer. Also, of course, unless the things are perpetually traveling in straight lines -- in which case you should have no trouble destroying them anyways -- the "lead" will constantly change in location. Actual opponents -- even computer AI opponents -- constantly vary their positioning and vectors.

MMO games, like this one is intended to be, always have ppl writing mods or user scripts to gain an advantage. The strongest arguement for a target leading icon that I can think of is that if the gamemakers don't put one into the game then someone else will make it an option. IMO its better to sanction and regulate as many of these types of tools as possible to keep the games balance in the hands of the developers.

Lead or no, people who use aimbots will still use aimbots to take the advantage.

I wasn't meaning aimbots, thats an entirely seperate issue. I was meaning the unofficial mods/scripts/addons that tend to pop up in MMO games. These do not always have to go to the extreme where they are considered cheats. Often they are just extra tools that increase the functionality of information already provided by the game, like adding in a targeting lead icon that you still have to aim for or providing advanced tracking info for publicly traded goods. I dislike having to trust third parties for software to stay competitive in mmo's. This often backfires for developers as well b/c third parties occasionally get pissed off over something in the game and include a malicious update to their previously beneficial piece of code.

We have made some additions to AI targeting, it should be easier to hit an enemy in distance.

We are currently play testing it, you can see it in the next TEST build release.
