Would it be feasible to have a cruiser whose entire right side is protected by a large shield? (orange and translucent, with perhaps a honeycombed pattern) I don't know how useful it would be in an asteroid mining operation, but it could be quite useful in protecting key ships or stations from solar winds in such a location as a military or science base/depot.

It would serve the same purpose as an asteroid during the solar winds, but is more mobile, able to escort freighters to a safer location until they have the room to jump out of the area. (I don't know if they need a clear path in front of them, but it makes sense)

However, I don't know if the technological state of the factions would be advanced enough to have a material capable of withstanding the solar winds and the sun's radiation (An example in scifi had such a ship being used to escort ships to a moon/planet that was quite close to the sun, where the mining operation was being held)

I think it is suited more for the story mode rather than multiplayer, as the multiplayer may not have too much of a plot? But in multiplayer, perhaps such a ship could be purchasable or be built for player factions to go alongside their operations in the asteroid belt?

I bet that could be useful for large operations for corporations like Terran Mining.

However, I do think it would be hard to find pilots willing to fly the ship.
I could imagine it won't be very fun for the player to just fly one ship back and forth.

And aren't Solar flares rare?

Well, I think it could be AI-controlled, like the patrols on the demo.

The Solar Winds may be rarer than seen in the video about them, but still, protection is protection, and it is best to have a shield in case solar wind approaches, rather than to be exposed to its devastating effects and then need one.

I saw interesting document about Sun yesterday and they showed how the Earth is protected from Sunwind nowadays - it is magnetic force caused by North and South magnetic pole. It does not shield earth from sunwind completely, but most of it. Technology required for shielding ships would have to be then probably also following this principle and I agree that it is quite good idea to have some important cruisers or stations using such technology and that in year 2081 it is not necessarily such a "fantasy".
