Greetings!

New Test Build Update 1.077.003

Extension to the first mission: Your first objective now is to destroy energy generators in a space station. The station is hidden inside an asteroid. After the destruction of the generators, you have to run away quickly, since the whole station will explode! Sector for the first mission also now contains new mother ship.

New or updated features:
- HUD notifications for damage, incoming enemy, solar flare, low fuel.
- New faction-specific prefabs for Russia, China and Fourth Reich.
- Prefab and missile explosions now damage all objects nearby (area damage).
- New server code – you need to connect to our server only when loading a mission or checkpoint or saving/loading your sector in the editor - other than that, you can stay offline.
- Many optimizations, minor improvements and fixes.

This update dropped my framerate below 1 fps in story mode, and crashes if I try to create a random sector. Also when trying to play an existing sector, I keep being told I have no ammo left even though I do. Framerate is erratic in a sector with only one prefab, sometimes 30+ and sometimes below 1.

Wow, we really did kill FPS in this release... it's lagging even on my computer.

Plus there are some other design mistakes... e.g. it's super hard to find those generators, and then your don't have your mother ship there - so you can't refuel if you need and basically then you can't finish the mission (you can cheat with numlock...).

We will make a new test build early next week... this one wasn't lucky!

I tested the new build. No lag issues for me, but it did take awhile for the story to load (maybe 3 minutes)

I thought it was great. Destroying the space station was fun, reminded me of Descent.

The voice alert stuff was cool.

There were only two big things I didn't like.

EDIT: Never mind about the first thing, I just didn't get how the doors work. However, I think the station should be designed so I am less tempted to just blast through the asteroid to get to the generators.

Second, the mother ship doesn't seem very convenient. After I destroy the base I'm low on fuel and shields, and the mothership is way off somewhere surrounded by enemies. I would have been fine if I went to the ship halfway through the mission, but for a story mode that seems like an unnecessary diversion. However, I think the mothership thing would work great on MMO and might work well in story mode if placed more strategically.

Minor issue: Thought the autocannon was a bit overpowered against station doors compared to rockets (its a bit counter-intuitive for a machine gun to blow open a door like that)

Overall, I am very impressed.

Just a thought for the Solo mode.
See you some quick cinematics in the game to give some "life"?
Nearby planets, stations where you can land with a few seconds of video, like Freelancer.
No need to see the planet or station in details.
Just ask, for fuel, ammunition, repair the ship, buy merchandise (sometimes illegal) to sell it cheaper in another solar system.
Or just buy a new spacecraft.

there are no planets lol ^_^

In terms of weapons power/balance, thats a thing to be play tested and tweaked well down the track, so I wouldnt stress too much about it at this point. Regarding the mothership thing...well all I can say there is I hope the MMO has pilotable tankers that can sit at the back of the fleet and refuel ships as neccessary (and supplies)

In terms of ammunition types, the wiki states SAPHEI to be armor piercing rounds, so one would assume they either hit harder (more damage) or can penetrate targets that other ammo types cannot deal damage to. Biochem ammo is stated to deal low infrastructure damage but high "human" damage...whatever that is (since you cant get out of your ship to ever get shot) :)

Biochem should do more damage to human and less to the ship.
It penetrates the hull and then does some nasty bioch-chem things to the pilot.

I will check how much is this weapon/ammo balanced...

So I suppose BioChem is useful to disable an enemy ship without destroying it, for looting. Right?

Ok i can't be the only one thinking there needs to be a navigation system or a map of where you have been already. Could be just for inside bases. Its frustrating when i can't complete a mission because i have no clue where i am going. Could even have signs in the tunnels atleast showing what tunnels leads to what rooms.

Game crashed, saved log file to send in a bit, when i reloaded the game it got reeeeally choppy off and on.

Edit* where the crap do i refill fuel exactly? i've been flying around the ship for 15 minutes.

When I did the mission, I recall there being arrows at the edge of the screen directing me to the generators. Made everything easy to find, but I think a map would be a more interesting (and realistic) way of navigating. IMO info on the HUD should only direct me to things within visual/hearing range.

@Powell, the refuel spot is at the front of the mothership, inside the alcove. There should be a yellow cube marking the space.

The next update of this mission will have much better placement of direction arrows, maybe that would help.

We need to test this navigation thing... see what's best. I don't want to kill it with giving you GPS-like navigation - because maybe then it would be too simple.

So let us know your opinions next week.

A fix for the bug that prevents us from drag-selecting sections of prefabs would be greatly appreciated! This bug has pretty much stopped my ability to build as its become very slow and painful if you miss click just once

Alright i'll have to try to find the refuel again. Yah i agree that having an all out gps would make it too easy but what if maybe you already either found the object or spot and wanted to come back to it and or if it only worked when inside an asteroid?

In any case i'll be looking forward to testing any sort. signs would definitely help
