It seems as if I can never just travel somewhere, when I want to, simply to mine and explore. I get the damn' message telling me to finish the mission objective before I can travel, but there are times I just need a break from the never-ending "dakka-dakka BOOM" stuff of the missions.

At a slight tangent, I haven't found anything to indicate I can refine materials and build my own stuff, either. Is there anything like that either now or in the pipeline?

After you finish the mission in the sector you are free to travel everywhere.

But i suffer the same thing because i just have to find out what happens next. it's hard to break free.

Pity you can't just abandon a mission then. One or two are nothing but a chore (mostly because of lag waves) and when they get too frustrating I'd just like to dump the mission and come back to it.

As an example, I have to follow some guy's ship at Rime, but the lag means he eludes me every time.

The Rime mission is a lot further on than a couple of missions. Most of the missions are manageable even when lag happens, but even a short delay in the Rime mission means the mission fails. The lag isn't down to my PC either, as my friend and I chat on Skype when we play and it happens to both of us at the same time.

Thankfully I went back to an earlier chapter where I'd completed the Templar mission and hadn't started another mission, so instead of heading to Rime I am now having an exploration/mining session.

EDIT: Just bought my first new ship, thanks to mining Gold - yay!
